Sample Concept Map for Protostomes and Deuterostomes

Assignment: Concept Map of Organisms Within the Animal Kingdom

Teacher notes: Taxonomy and classification systems change frequently, do not be alarmed if students do not have the exact same taxons for organisms. Look for overall organization going from Kingdom to phylum to class, order, family, genus species. Check to make sure that organisms within the same family are placed on the same area of the map. For instance, all the segmented worms Annelida would be placed together. There are thousands of species, so it is unrealistic to expect every single one to be named, look for a few representatives.

Some students may choose to focus in on a single family and list a variety of species, others may have a more general concept map. Both are acceptable. In this case, it is the PROCESS of making the map that is more important than the exact details of the final product.
