Label the Muscles of the Chest
Muscles of the Chest:
-
Pectoralis Major:
- Location: Covers the upper part of the chest.
- Function: Responsible for the movement of the shoulder joint, particularly the adduction (bringing the arm toward the midline of the body) and medial rotation of the arm.
- Pectoralis Minor:
- Location: Located beneath the pectoralis major.
- Function: Stabilizes the scapula (shoulder blade) and assists in the movement of the shoulder.
- Serratus Anterior:
- Location: Lies on the side of the chest.
- Function: Stabilizes the scapula and assists in the rotation of the scapula.
Muscles of the Abdomen:
-
Rectus Abdominis:
- Location: Runs vertically along the front of the abdomen.
- Function: Responsible for flexing the lumbar spine (bringing the chest towards the pelvis), and it plays a role in stabilizing the pelvis during movements.
- External Oblique:
- Location: Forms the outer layer of the lateral abdominal wall.
- Function: Allows for trunk rotation and lateral flexion, also contributes to abdominal compression.
- Internal Oblique:
- Location: Lies beneath the external oblique, running at right angles to it.
- Function: Assists in trunk rotation and lateral flexion, and it also contributes to abdominal compression.
- Transversus Abdominis:
- Location: The deepest layer of the abdominal muscles.
- Function: Acts as a stabilizing muscle, providing support to the internal organs and helping to compress the abdominal contents.
